In 2004, when U.S. military activities in Iraq and Afghanistan changed from combat to control and containment, the danger to military people also changed. Instead of regular battles, suicide bombs became a bigger problem. At the time, Marines used checkpoints all over Iraq to look for weapons and other illegal items. However, practise said that women could not be searched by male
soldiers unless a female was present. This allowed insurgents to use women for smuggling and suicide bombing, so the Marine Corps had to change its checkpoint practises or, as a USMC report later put it, adapt to “overcome the Middle Eastern cultural gender sensitivities by using women Marines to enforc[e As a result, the “Lioness and Female Engagement Teams were attached to ground combat units” to make checks safer.
Special Ops: Lioness, Taylor Sheridan’s newest drama series, starts this weekend on Paramount+. It moves the Lioness Programme into an alternate timeline where the scope of operations went beyond search and capture to include spying and assassinations. The real-life Lioness Programme also grew, but in other ways, like “running medical clinics, distributing medicine and humanitarian aid, and meeting in Afghan homes.”
